XPM (XML Product Map) Specification V0.99An XPM specification is an XML document specification that characterises the features of the CONEX information model. It is compatible with the W3C XML recommendations and is transformable to other language formats when a conversion wrapper is provided. It was developed and used to represent heterogeneous product data aross different small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) contexts. The theoretical foundation of XPM is the Product Map Theory (developed from semiotics), which regards a product representation as a semiotic sign with the signifier (structure) and the signified (concept). The structure thus has no meaning until the concept is assigned and conveyed. The Product Map theory perfectly makes the separation of structures (forms) from concepts (terms of vocabulary) and the separation of concepts from reification (terms with particular values, e.g. color --> red). The separable features of Product Map further make XPM more suitable to generate new concepts through collaborative methods in both synchronous and asynchronous collaborative editing systems.
